What is
BMX Racing?
BMX racing is similiar to Motocross (motorcylce) racing in format
and general principles. Two
big differences are BMX is less expensive and
much safer. Riders all start balanced behind a
starting gate and listen to a
cadence and/or watch lights to anticipate when the gate will drop
to signal
the start of the race. Riders then compete against each other and have to
navigate
obstacles along the way.
What do I need to start?
All you
need is a bike, a full face helmet, long pants, long sleeve shirt, an NBL
membership and
the desire to have fun and compete. NBL memberships can be
obtained at the track and are
$45 per year. The NBL is the governing body of
organized BMX racing.
Who can race?
Anyone. We separate riders by
gender, age and ability. All new riders will begin in the rookie
class and
earn their way into Novice and Expert classes based on their skills and the
number
of wins they accumulate. Age groups begin with 5 & under, through
55 & over. Several of
our riders are adults. Therefore it is truly a
sport that the parent can have direct participation
with their child. We are
open to anyone who wishes to participate.
How do I get started?
Just
come by the track during our normal hours of operation (see practice and race
schedule)
and get with one of the track operators and they can get you
started. If you like, we can pair
you up with more experienced riders to help
guide you around until you get comfortable
enough to do it on your
own.
Is BMX a real sport?
Yes. In fact, the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) has recognized BMX racing as an
Olympic sport and it will
make its debut in the Summer Olympics in 2008. BMX also has
professional
levels in which riders are able to make a hansom living.
Is is
hard?
In general no. However, most children do find it intimidating at first,
but after a few laps
around the track, they get comfortable and improve with
every lap. Soon they find themselves
earning trophies and other cool awards.
